What is GPA?
GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is a standard way of measuring academic achievement in the U.S. and many other countries. It is calculated by dividing the total amount of grade points earned by the total amount of credit hours attempted.
Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA
- Unweighted GPA: Measured on a scale of 0 to 4.0. It doesn't take the difficulty of your classes into account. An 'A' in an AP class is the same as an 'A' in a regular class.
- Weighted GPA: Goes up to 5.0 (or higher). It gives extra points for honors or AP/IB classes. An 'A' in an AP class might be worth 5.0 points instead of 4.0.
Why GPA Matters
Your GPA is one of the most important factors for college admissions and scholarship eligibility. It demonstrates your long-term work ethic and academic consistency.
Improving Your GPA
The best way to improve your GPA is to take challenging classes that you can handle, attend all classes, and turn in assignments on time. Retaking a class to replace a poor grade is also an option at many institutions.
