Understanding Weighted Grades

In many courses, not all assignments are worth the same. A "weighted" grade means categories like Exams, Homework, and Quizzes constitute a specific percentage of your final grade.

How to Calculate Manually

To calculate a weighted average:

1. Multiply each grade by its weight percentage (e.g., 90% x 0.20 for a 20% weight).
2. Add all the weighted values together.
3. If weights don't add up to 100%, divide the sum by the total weight.

Example

Homework (20%): You got 90% → 18 points
Midterm (30%): You got 80% → 24 points
Final (50%): You need to estimate this.

Current Score (out of 50%) = 42 points. If you get 80% on the final (40 points), calculated final grade = 82% (B-).
